Navy and blue cabinets in Wilmington

The color people ask for once they have stopped being afraid of color. Usually on the island first.

Start with the island

Nearly every navy kitchen we build starts as a navy island in an otherwise white room. It is the lowest-risk way to use a strong color: one piece of furniture in the middle of the floor, surrounded by light. If you love it in a year, the perimeter can follow.

Navy is a coastal color without being a theme

A navy kitchen in a Wrightsville or Southport house reads as coastal without a single rope, shell or anchor in sight. That is the version of coastal that still looks right in fifteen years.

What it is built from

Painted navy and blue. Dark paint shows dust and shows a poor finish, so the door and the spray both have to be right — it is a finish that rewards a good cabinet and punishes a cheap one.

Hardware matters more here

On white, hardware is a detail. On navy it is the contrast, and it is the first thing anyone touches. We specify the hardware with the cabinet, and brass on navy is the combination that sells itself in the showroom.

Works with: brass or antique bronze, white or veined quartz, natural oak.
